Dear Reader,
Some things in life happen best when we're not trying. Sleep is a great example: the harder you chase it, the further it runs. It used to work for my maths homework too - great advice Dad, thanks! That's served me well.
Reflecting on my new framework "I RISE" it struck me today that the same might even be true of "I", that sense of self, that grounded, easy feeling of simply being you, which is often the foundation for, and sometimes the objective of personal change.
Perhaps we become most ourselves not when we’re striving for it, but when we are absorbed in something else entirely: walking by the sea, playing music, losing track of time in a great conversation, sharing, doing something for someone else.
I was in the sauna (Olla Hiki - I'm in Newquay at the moment) this morning and noticed how the soft whisper of the fire, and the gentle crunch of the waves in the harbour, both eased me, effortlessly, into a sense of presence.
So much of the good stuff in life happens outside our conscious awareness. Often, it seems, the more we try to control it, the more we get in the way.
That’s why the solution-focused approach is so powerful. It gently takes the focus off problems and redirects it onto what we want instead. How we want things to be. And the neuroscience agrees: when your mind relaxes, your brain’s networks of calm, creativity and confidence come alive.
The same is true in hypnosis. Especially the light, non-directive kind. No effort. No struggle. Just space. And then solutions.
Sometimes, the best things in life happen all by themselves. 🌙
I wonder what examples come to mind for you.
Adam
